The country's three new criminal laws, which replaced the British-era indian Penal Code, Code of criminal Procedure, and indian Evidence Act, went into effect on Monday, July 1, 2024. The laws, named Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA), take into account some of the contemporary social realities and crimes. The delhi police filed its first formal complaint under the BNS against a street vendor in the Kamala Market area.

A complaint has been made against a street seller under Section 285 of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for allegedly impeding the New delhi Railway Station's foot overbridge and conducting sales operations, according to a report by the news agency ANI. The accused, Pankaj Kumar, of Barh, Bihar, has been named in the First Information Report (FIR). Delhi's Kamla Market police Station, the nation's capital, received the first complaint filed under Section Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023.

According to the police in the FIR, the accused was obstructing and upsetting passengers by selling water and tobacco from a cart close to the major route. The culprit disregarded the police's requests to take down his cart when they were on patrol in the neighbourhood, according to ANI.

Notably, the indian Evidence Act has been replaced with the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam, the CrPC with the Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, and the indian Penal Code (IPC) with the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
