What is 'Kallakkadal phenomenon', which happens near Kerala?

The "Kallakkadal phenomenon" is predicted to occur in kerala and tamil Nadu's coastal regions until 11.30 p.m. on Monday, according to news agency PTI, which cited the indian National Centre for Ocean Information services (INCOIS). This has prompted authorities to warn local fishermen and residents. A "sudden swell of the seas, resulting in rough waves" is the phenomenon in question. "As the choppy waves are expected to worsen, heed the authorities' advice and avoid the danger zone areas," the indian National Centre for Ocean Information services (INCOIS) was reported as saying by PTI.

Fishing boats should be securely anchored in harbors, according to INCOIS, the organization in charge of giving weather warnings to fishermen around the country. The risk of a collision can be reduced by maintaining a safe distance between boats. The central agency declared that fishing equipment safety needed to be guaranteed. Moreover, INCOIS recommended avoiding beach visits and any involvement with the sea.

Why is it called 'Kallakkadal'?

- The translation of "Kallakkadal" is "a sea that comes suddenly like a thief." According to INCOIS, swell surges get their name since they occur suddenly and without any warnings or particular indications because to strong winds in the southern indian Ocean.

- The name, which comes from a combination of two malayalam words—"Kallan," which means thief, and "Kadal," which means sea—is frequently used by the local fishermen. When combined, these phrases are spoken as "Kallakkadal," which represents an ocean that comes at you quickly and suddenly, much like a robber.

- The term "Kallakkadal" originates from the unexpected strong winds in the southern indian Ocean, according to the kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) and INCOIS.

In 2012, the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) formally approved the name "Kallakkadal."

- Large areas are submerged under the water as a result of Kallakkadal occurrences. Since many people confuse Kallakkadal for tsunamis, these occurrences have drawn attention, especially in the wake of the 2004 indian Ocean tsunami.

- Swell surges, also known as Kallakkadal, and tsunamis are two separate kinds of waves with totally different methods and origins.
