Reportedly more than 20 cases related to Gyanvapi complex are going on in different courts. The first case was filed in the district court of Banaras in the year 1991 by Advocate Vijay shankar Rastogi. The second case was filed jointly by Maan Bahadur and Anupam Dwivedi in january 2023. petitioner shankar Rastogi has claimed on the basis of historians' articles, religious texts and maps that there is a temple of Lord Adi Vishweshwar on about one bigha of plot number 9130, 9 biswas of plot number 9131 and 6 dhur of plot number 9132. In his claim he has mentioned Skandapuran, Kashi Khand and other Puranas. Apart from this, the case on which the district court of Banaras has ordered the Archaeological survey of india (ASI) to conduct a survey was filed by five Hindu women in august 2021.

Meanwhile these 5 women are Rakhi Singh, lakshmi devi, Sita Sahu, Manju Vyas and rekha Pathak. The petitioners described the Gyanvapi complex as a part of the kashi vishwanath temple and sought permission to worship Maa Shringar Gauri here. After this the court ordered a survey to be conducted. The survey started on 14 May 2022 in Gyanvapi campus. The Hindu side claimed in the court that during the survey on May 16, Shivalinga was found in the ablution room of the mosque. After this the entire area of the ablutions room was sealed. However, the Muslim side called it not a Shivalinga but a fountain.

Moreover the Muslim side also went to the supreme court against the survey, but it did not get any relief from there. The supreme court directed that ASI should conduct the survey in such a manner that there is no breakage. The central government has assured that the survey will be conducted without digging and without demolition. Finally, ASI has submitted its 839-page report to the court. ASI has made a big claim in the survey. He claims that earlier there was a temple in the Gyanvapi complex and the mosque was constructed after demolishing the temple. ASI has also presented many evidences in its report. During the survey, they also found a stone on which the time of construction of the mosque was said to be between 1676-1677. Apart from this, it has been said that the courtyard of the mosque was repaired in 1792-93.
