Reportedly due to the outbreak of H5N1 influenza, singapore has suspended the importation of poultry and poultry products from several regions in affected countries. As a result, singapore has temporarily suspended imports from places where cases of bird flu, known as H5N1, are believed to be high. These locations include four Japanese prefectures - Saga, Ibaraki, Saitama and Kagoshima. as well as parts of the United States, Canada, France, belgium and Germany. In a circular dated Dec 8 to meat and egg traders, the singapore Food Agency (SFA) said the temporary restriction was imposed due to an increase in highly pathogenic avian influenza, commonly known as bird flu.

Meanwhile "Heat-treated poultry products will not be subject to restrictions in accordance with the World Animal health Guidelines for the inactivation of AI virus," the circular for Japanese imports said. Heat-treated poultry refers to processed food-like products. Bird flu, which has killed hundreds of millions of birds in past years, typically strikes europe in the fall and winter, researchers say. It has also recently been found on farms in Cambodia, japan and South Korea.

As per report Japanese media NHK reported last november that the local government in Saga Prefecture would destroy about 40,000 birds at the affected farm.
