A new achievement has been added to the name of odisha chief minister Naveen Patnaik. Patnaik on sunday (July 23) became the second longest serving chief minister of a state in india with a tenure of 23 years and 139 days. He has left behind the record of former West bengal chief minister JyotiBasu.

cm Patnaik is now second only to Sikkim's pawan kumar Chamling, who holds the record for leading the state for the longest period of 24 years and 166 days between december 1994 and May 2019. Whereas former cm Basu left the post in 2000 after ruling the eastern state continuously for 23 years.While Chamling lost the assembly elections in the Himalayan state in May 2019.

Chamling's record can also be destroyed

In 1997, when naveen patnaik entered politics after the death of his father and former chief minister Biju Patnaik, his opponents and well-wishers dismissed him as a novice. If the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) returns to power in odisha in next year's assembly elections, Patnaik will be on course to become the longest-serving chief minister in the country.

After the death of his father, he contested the by-election from the AskaLok Sabha seat and won. Later, with the help of bjp, naveen patnaik broke away from Janata Dal and formed his own party Biju Janata Dal (BJD). In the next year's lok sabha elections, his party forged an alliance with the bjp and Patnaik joined prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's government as minister of Steel and Mines.His alliance with bjp continued till 2009. Later chose a different path. naveen patnaik is a leader with a strong and popular image. His biggest strength has been to data-face political challenges. Patnaik has made every effort to retain his voter base.
