Valentines was the representative of love:

Valentine's Day was mentioned in the book Aurea of Jacobus de Vorazin. It was told that this day is dedicated to Saint valentine, the priest of Rome. It is said that there was a saint valentine in 270 AD, who believed in love and used it to promote it. At the same time, the king was against it,  the words of valentine used to knock the king. valentine was a supporter of love marriage and all this seemed to the king as a distraction.

King Claudius of Rome believed that love or attraction distracted soldiers. To prevent this, the king banned the marriage and engagement of soldiers in Rome. Saint valentine felt bad about this, he went against the king and got people married. Because of this rebellion, the king hanged Saint valentine on 14 february, so Valentine's Day is marked as february 14 in memory of Saint Valentine.

According to the reports, the first Valentine's Day was celebrated in the year 496. Valentine's Day started with the Roman festival, by the end of the fifth century, Pope Gelasius had declared 14 february as Saint Valentine's Day.
