One Nation One Election - List Of Parties Supporting & Opposing The Bill

SIBY JEYYA
The "One Nation, One Election" Bill, also known as the Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-Ninth Amendment) Bill, 2024, will be introduced by Union Law minister Arjun ram Meghwal on Tuesday.

This call for broader consultations highlights the government's intention to gather a wide range of opinions before proceeding. In addition to the important bill, Meghwal is also expected to present legislation to data-align the proposed electoral changes with elections in the territories of Jammu & Kashmir, Puducherry, and the delhi NCT.

It is anticipated that the composition of the Joint Committee, which will be entrusted with examining the proposed change, would fairly represent the various political groups in the Parliament. The Bharatiya Janata Party's numerical advantage puts it in a strong position to win both a significant representation and the head of the committee, underscoring the party's significant influence in the legislative process.

Amit Shah, the Union home minister, is probably going to take part in the discussion. This group, which was formerly headed by former president ram Nath Kovind, suggested holding simultaneous elections in stages.

In an effort to change India's electoral landscape, the Union cabinet approved the idea for simultaneous elections last week. The decision to synchronize local body elections with this new electoral schedule has, however, been postponed by the cabinet for the time being.

Meghwal is anticipated to reiterate the demand for the bill's referral to the Joint Committee by outlining the need for in-depth discussions with MPs and the general public. The Speaker of the Lok Sabha, Om Birla, would ask parties to propose members for this special panel when the bill is introduced.
