The level of untreated waste in Gurugram is alarming, which is having a negative impact on the environment and people's health. In view of this, the government has declared the necessity of solid waste management by the municipality in Gurugram. To address these serious waste management problems, the government has launched the Solid Waste Environmental Requirements Program (Sweep).

Formation of a high-level committee

Haryana Chief Secretary and Chairman of the State Disaster Management Authority T.V.S.N. prasad has constituted a high-level committee, which includes Divisional Commissioner of Gurugram, Deputy Commissioner, Municipal Commissioner, Chief engineer of Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority, Senior Environmental engineer of haryana State pollution Control Board and Deputy Commissioner of police (Headquarters). The main objective of the Sweep program led by this committee is to improve waste management in Gurugram. He informed that this committee has been given the responsibility of implementing a three-tier system for waste collection, segregation, transportation, processing and disposal in all 35 wards of Gurugram and GMDA areas.

24x7 control room to be set up

Additional measures include setting up a 24x7 control room, which will include a dedicated helpline for proactive monitoring, conducting gap-analysis of existing infrastructure, creating GIS-based maps for waste tracking, and developing a robust grievance redressal mechanism. The programme also focuses on managing construction and demolition waste, ensuring adequate machinery for waste processing, instituting Swachhata Awards and launching Information, education and Communication (IEC) plan to raise awareness.

Daily reports will be submitted to the SDMA and punitive action will be taken as per the relevant laws for any violation of the orders. The SVEEP initiative will eventually be implemented in other municipal areas of haryana as well, reflecting the government's commitment to environmental protection and public health.
