'The benefit of freebies is not always available to the needy'

Former Finance Secretary of the government of india, subhash chandra Garg says, sometimes the benefit of freebies i.e. free schemes is also available to those people who are ineligible for it. The facilities given to the poor or the unemployed or the laborers in NREGA cannot be called freebies. Many times, the benefits of facilities like free electricity, free ration are taken by people who do not really need it. For this, it is necessary to make the process transparent.

He also said that the total budget of the government is around 45 lakh crores. Out of this, the expenditure on free schemes is only about 4-5 lakh crores. The country gets around 25 lakh crores from taxes. In such a situation, only 15 to 20% of the total tax revenue is being spent on freebies or free schemes.

'Free schemes are a huge pressure on the economy'

Manish Khemka, chairman of Global Taxpayers Trust, believes that the economy cannot be strengthened due to free schemes. He said, 'The supreme court also had to make a harsh comment on the countless free schemes running in tamil Nadu. Instead of free schemes, government expenditure should be according to the resources. The poor and the weak should get help, but it should increase productivity. In developed countries, more than 50% of the population pays direct tax, while in india 98% of the population is still out of it.'
