Cabinet approves agreements ahead of Bhutan's PM visit to India...

Prior to the arrival of Bhutanese prime minister Tshering Tobgay, who will be in the nation from march 14–18, the union cabinet on wednesday approved two agreements to be inked with the country in the fields of energy and food safety. This will be Tobgay's first overseas visit since taking power in January, the month after Bhutan's national election. Senior officials and the ministers of industry, energy and natural resources, and foreign affairs from bhutan will be joining him.

The visit takes place against the backdrop of rumors that china and bhutan are approaching an agreement to resolve their long-standing data-border dispute. This development might have significant security implications for vital sections of the data-border between india and bhutan, including the Doklam plateau. At the request of his indian counterpart narendra Modi, Tobgay is on an official visit. In addition to meeting President Droupadi Murmu, he will speak with Modi one-on-one. Along with other dignitaries, Tobgay will also meet S Jaishankar, the minister of external affairs. On this visit, he's going to mumbai as well.

According to the external affairs ministry, india and bhutan have "exemplary ties of friendship and cooperation, based on trust, goodwill, and mutual understanding." Tobgay's visit will provide the two countries with a chance to assess the status of their relationship and talk about potential avenues for future growth. Prior to the visit, the bhutan Food and Drug Authority (BFDA) and the Food Safety and Standards Authority of india (FSSAI) signed an agreement for cooperation in food safety during a meeting of the cabinet presided over by prime minister Modi. According to an official release, the deal will make trading between the two nations easier.

In order to demonstrate compliance with the FSSAI's regulations for exporting goods from bhutan to india, BFDA will provide a health certificate. Both parties will benefit from lower compliance expenses and improved ease of doing business. The signing of a memorandum of understanding for increased cooperation in energy efficiency and conservation measures between Bhutan's Department of Energy and India's Bureau of Energy Efficiency was also approved by the Cabinet.
