A group led by indian government employee Sir Joseph Bhor suggested in 1946 that a National Medical Center be established in India. Following independence, a plan was put up that combined Pandit Nehru's aspirations with the committee's suggestions. The foundation stone of the All india Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) was placed in delhi in 1952 with assistance from the government of New Zealand. Pandit Nehru envisioned india as the home of South east Asia's top medical research and treatment facility. This Nehru dream was initiated and carried out by the then health Minister, Rajkumari Amrit Kaur.
