External Affairs minister Jaishankar today met the families of 8 ex-Indian Navy personnel sentenced to death in Qatar. A few days ago, the government of that country sentenced to death 8 ex-Indian Navy personnel who were detained in qatar for the past one year due to various reasons. While this information has caused great vibrations in India, steps are being taken to rescue the Indians. Today, indian Foreign minister Jaishankar met the families of the 8 people and said that "India will continue to make every effort to free the Indians". Talking about this on his twitter page, he said, "This morning I met the families of 8 indians detained in Qatar. The government attaches great importance to this case. The government will continue to make all efforts to release them. It is noteworthy that the 8 people, including former officers who once commanded major indian warships, were working for Tahra Global Technologies and Consultancy services, a private company that provides training and related services to Qatar's armed forces.

Sources said some of them were working on a very sensitive project. In particular, they are said to have worked on midget submarines with stealth characteristics based on Italian technology. The eight marines have been charged with espionage, reports said. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs had earlier said that it was shocked by the decision and would raise the matter with the Qatari authorities. "We are deeply shocked by the verdict of death sentence and are awaiting a detailed verdict. We are in touch with the family members and the legal team and are exploring all legal avenues," the ministry said.
