Why are Kashmir-Ladakh residents concerned about snowfall?

There are two main reasons the kashmir valley has been in the headlines a lot. First, due to the stunning valleys blanketed with snow, and second, due to terrorist incidents. However, for a while now, for these two reasons, this valley has not been discussed. Instead, Kashmir—which is renowned for its beauty and snowfall—is experiencing a dry winter this year. This indicates that kashmir has not yet received any particularly heavy snowfall this year. Mukhtar Ahmed, the director of the indian Meteorological Department in Srinagar, told news agency ANI that whereas these areas saw an average of 130.61 cm of snowfall in january of the previous year, this year has seen no snowfall at all.

This year, the number of tourists visiting kashmir has significantly decreased due to absences caused by snowfall. Gulmarg was teeming with visitors in the winter until last year. Numerous thousands of people go from all over the nation to this location each year to enjoy the snowfall. However, government statistics indicate that the lack of snow in 2024 has resulted in a 60% decrease in tourists compared to the previous year. As a result, the local tourism sector has also slowed down. In such a case, one could wonder why kashmir did not receive any snowfall this year, as it does every year, what the cause might be, and how this seasonal shift might affect travel.
