The custom of consuming dog meat caused much debate in south korea for a very long time. This law was also proposed by previous administrations, but they were unable to see it through to completion. This bill was passed by President Yoon Suk Yeol in less than two years after taking office. dogs are typically regarded as pets in Western nations, and eating dog meat is morally repugnant. When it became known that the organizing body for the 2018 olympic games was endorsing eateries that served dog meat, south korea was subject to international condemnation.

Nonetheless, some South Koreans continue protesting even after the law was introduced, and the majority of them are those who don't eat dog meat. Some who oppose contend that this is a long-standing custom that shouldn't be broken.

Where is it illegal to eat dog meat?

South Korea will now be added to the Asian nations that have outlawed the trade in dog meat after the measure is approved by the president. These comprise nations like Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand, and the Philippines. But in India, there are no such limitations. The government of Nagaland outlawed the sale, trade, and import of dog meat in July 2020. Following this, a few dealers filed a court case against this ruling. The Gauhati High Court's Kohima Bench reversed the ban on the sale of dog meat in june 2023.

According to the Gauhati High court, the petitioner sells dog meat as a means of subsistence. For this reason, limitations imposed by the government are incorrect. Even if the court stated in its ruling that dog meat cannot be regarded as appropriate food, the state government did not have the authority to decide to outlaw it.
