While natural lakes are widely known, have you ever explored a man-made lake? Pakhal Lake, nestled within the Pakhal Wildlife Sanctuary in Telangana, is recently drawing attention for its stunning beauty and historical significance.
Located in the warangal district of Telangana, Pakhal Lake is an impressive man-made reservoir, covering approximately 30 square kilometers. It was constructed in the 12th century by Jagadhala Mummudi Nayudu under the orders of Kakatiya king Ganapathidev. The lake is part of the expansive Pakhal Wildlife Sanctuary, which spans over 900 square kilometers and is surrounded by lush forests. This picturesque setting makes it a popular destination for tourists, especially on weekends.
Pakhal Lake is also notable for its biodiversity. The adjacent Pakhal Wildlife Sanctuary is home to a variety of wildlife, including numerous animal and bird species. According to Deputy Range Officer Reena, Pakhal Lake is the second-largest man-made lake in Asia. The lake, which covers 226 hectares, is situated in the Narsampet forest range and has been a key feature of the region since its construction.
In 2016, a biodiversity park was established in the sanctuary, adding to its appeal. The park boasts a range of attractions, including a Butterfly Park, Double Decker, Vanavilas, Nature Camps, Herbal Garden, Children’s Garden, boating facilities, a Zip Line, Stone Monoliths, Tree house, watch Tower, and Rest Rooms. During winter, Siberian birds visit the lake to lay their eggs before returning to their native lands.
Pakhal Lake is also crucial for local agriculture, providing water for thousands of acres of crops and serving as a source of purified drinking water for nearby areas.
The lake attracts a steady stream of visitors from across Telangana, with over a hundred people coming daily. For those wishing to stay overnight, a green hotel has been set up nearby to enhance the experience. Deputy Range Officer reena also noted that several development projects are underway to further improve the region’s appeal.
