In a flurry of tweets, tech entrepreneur Elon Musk publicly blasted the current US administration's immigration restrictions, echoing his mother Maye Musk's difficult journey to earn American citizenship. Maye Musk recently discussed her problems in acquiring US citizenship, putting light on the complexity of the legal immigration procedure.

Maye Musk emphasised her personal problems in reaction to a tweet shared by her son Elon Musk, who alleged the ruling Democrats were providing citizenship to illegal immigrants in order to stay in power.
"I couldn't get US citizenship even though my father and grandmother were born in Minnesota, and my grandfather, john Elon Haldeman, was born in Illinois," she went on to say. "I was born in Canada, therefore it took me 12 years to obtain visas, a green card, a lawyer, and various medical exams. That's how difficult it is.
Elon Musk, echoing his mother's views, recognised the hardship of his own road to full citizenship in the United States. "Yeah, it was extremely difficult and took over a decade for me to get US citizenship," he told me.
In another post on X, Maye Musk addressed her son and recounted a shared personal experience: “In the early 1990’s, remember when I would drop you off at Toronto airport? Passport control wouldn’t let you into the USA because you were Canadian and had forgotten your pink slip, which verified you as a student at the university of Pennsylvania. I had to pick you up, take you back to my apartment, and return you to the airport with that pink slip.”
