Telangana among high prevalence States for child marriages

Telangana is one of the states with the highest frequency of child marriages in the country, with the state's average being higher than the national average, and the state government is working to put an end to the practice by 2030. telangana is one of eight states with a high frequency of child marriage. According to the National Crime Records Bureau's (NCRB) 2021 report, there were 25 child marriages recorded in telangana in 2017, 24 in 2018, 35 in 2019, 60 in 2020, and 57 in 2021.
According to the National Family health Survey 5 (NFHS 2019-21), Telangana's child marriage average was 23.5%, compared to the national average of 23.3%. Keeping this in mind, the state government has increased measures to guarantee that underage children in the state are not married before reaching the legal age. The women and Child Development (WCD) department, the State Legal services Authority (SLSA), the TS Commission for Protection of Child Rights (SCPCR), and Bachpan Bachao Andolan (BBA) recently met to examine the many difficulties and solutions to child marriage and child sexual assault.
According to state government data, the top three districts with the greatest frequency of child marriage in the 15-19 age bracket were Khammam, Nalgonda, and Mahbubnagar, with karimnagar having the lowest rate. According to NCRB data, only 154 cases of child marriage were formally reported in the state under the Prohibition of Child marriage Act from 2019 to 2021. In reality, 117 child marriages have been avoided under the Rachakonda Commissionerate's authority in the previous five years, with 21 of these being halted in 2023.
According to the NFHS (2019-21), 23.5 percent of Telangana's 20-24 year-old women married before they turned 18. Teenage pregnancy, which is mostly caused by child marriage, has decreased from 7.9% in 2015-16 to 6.8% in 2019-21 on an all-India basis. The equivalent fall in telangana was from 10.6% to 5.8%, according to the report.
According to authorities, the government is taking measures to bring together diverse stakeholders so that they may collaborate to reduce child marriages in the state. According to authorities, the previous government's 'Kalyana Lakshmi' and 'Shaadi Mubarak' initiatives helped discourage underage marriages in the state.
According to the reports, girls from poorer homes are more likely to marry younger than girls from wealthy households. At the state level, 16.4 percent of girls aged 15 to 19 from low-income households were married as child brides, compared to 15.1 percent of girls from middle-class and 5.3 percent from upper-income households.
The Prohibition of Child marriage Act of 2006 states that any marriage solemnized between minors under the legal age restriction is null and invalid. The statute also establishes penalties for numerous violations such as permitting or performing child weddings between minors or marrying children with adults.
