Lionsgate is well-known for its action films such as john Wick, but Universal and Blumhouse have released a new hollywood thriller, Monkey Man, directed by actor Dev Patel. What distinguishes it is its distinct inspiration from indian culture, namely the legendary Lord Hanuman. This adds an intriguing element of indian narrative to hollywood films. Monkey Man is set in modern-day mumbai and follows Kid (Patel), an ex-convict who is confronted with the harsh reality of India's caste system. Kid's childhood recollections of his adoring mother and stories of Lord Hanuman clash with his adult existence as an underpaid waitress. The film draws comparisons between the crooks in Kid's city and the villains from indian mythology that he adored as a boy.
