According to a Sky news report, "the 59-year-old surpassed the milestone of compatriot Gennady Patalka, who spent a total of 878 days, 11 hours, 29 minutes and 48 seconds in space in five space missions before retiring in 2017." Kononenko, who is the commander of the Russian space agency Roscosmos Cosmonaut Corps, is on his fifth space mission. Along with fellow Russian Nikolai Chub and nasa astronaut Laurel O'Hara, he will begin his current mission to the international Space Station on september 15, 2023.
He will complete 1000 days in space on june 5 this year, becoming the first person to achieve this feat. Also, he will have spent 1,110 days in space when his current mission, which is scheduled to end on september 23, ends. The 59-year-old said she doesn't feel isolated as she video calls her relatives and does regular exercise. However, she said it was difficult not to see her children in front of her eyes. "It's only after returning home that children grow up without a father for hundreds of days when he is gone," he said. "This time no one will come back to him."
