A special cbi court in Mohali, punjab on friday sentenced a former police officer to life imprisonment in a murder case. The case is that this sentence has been given for the crime of kidnapping a fruit seller from his house in Tarn Taran district in 1993 and killing him under the guise of a fake encounter.

Officials said that apart from sentencing former Station house Officer (SHO) Gurbachan Singh to life imprisonment, the court also sentenced the then Deputy Superintendent of police (DSP) of Tarn Taran city, dilbagh singh, to seven years in jail under Section 364 of the indian Penal Code (IPC) related to kidnapping. dilbagh singh retired as Deputy Inspector General of police (DIG).

According to punjab police officials, fruit seller Gulshan Kumar was kidnapped from his house on 22 june 1993. He was kept in illegal custody for a month. He was killed in a fake encounter on July 22 the same year.

Three other accused in the case, Assistant Sub-Inspector arjun Singh, Devinder Singh and Sub-Inspector Balbir Singh, died during the trial. On the orders of the supreme court, the case was handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in 1995.

CBI filed chargesheet after six years

CBI filed its chargesheet in 1999. Charges were framed against the accused on february 7, 2020, 21 years later. A cbi spokesperson said in a statement that during the trial, the cbi produced 32 witnesses, including eyewitnesses, who gave concrete evidence that dilbagh singh and Gurbachan Singh abducted Kumar from his house, kept him illegally hostage and later murdered him on July 22, 1993.
