How India-Canada relations strained, but not bad?

Sekar Chandra

As per report India's relations have not been bad because just a few days ago a military delegation from canada had come and went through training and a press conference with the representatives of the indian Army. When the indian press asked questions about relations from the delegation there, the head of the delegation there said that there will be no reduction in defense cooperation between india and canada, there will be no hindrance anywhere, and whatever Diplomacy is going on between india and canada, due to the delegation that is being talked about, there will be no impact on our Defense Corporation. Apart from this, the head of the Canadian opposition has also said that the way emergency law has been used in canada, the way the concept of rule of law has been negated is in itself a wrong use. This is a wrong policy. Tudo should not have done this. The supreme court there has recently ruled that the government's use of emergency power is wrong. We should not forget that it has been many years since india and canada gave each other diplomatic recognition and established relations. And there is a lot of exchange in various sectors like aviation, textiles, chemicals and defense corporations, diamonds.

Meanwhile if we look at the figures of the government of canada and this is also stated in the release of our Foreign Ministry, the relations between our two countries are close and the trade deficit is also in favor of India. We are good friends here. It remains to be seen what impact the Nijjar incident and Pannu incident will have in the Indo-Pacific region, because india, America, Japan, australia are members of the Quad. canada is not its member. There is talk of including canada soon. canada also wants to move upward from the status of a middle power and a middle ground state.

If Canada's relations with india deteriorate, india may hinder Canada's expansion in the Indo-Pacific region. As far as indian foreign policy is concerned, it has become very aggressive since 2014 with the arrival of prime minister Narendra Modi. The foreign policy that was done during the Nehru period or the foreign policy that was done during the time of UPA 1 and UPA 2, used to be reactionary. If there was any allegation against us or any dispute, we would only be able to respond.
