Vijayakanth nicknamed Captain, a versatile tamil actor, died thursday in chennai at the age of 71. He was a successful actor who also became a people's leader when he entered politics and founded his political party, Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK). It was not, however, an easy voyage. From selling shampoo in kerala to working as a diamond salesperson in the 1970s, Vijayakanth worked a variety of odd jobs before launching his acting career. During his early days in the film industry, he was turned down due of his "dark" skin tone. His given name was changed from Vijayaraj to Vijayakanth. Vijayakanth had not given up despite the difficulties.
He made his film debut at the age of 27. He played a villain in a bad role in 1979. Though his performances in the films were recognized, the majority of his early flicks were box-office disappointments. And when he finally succeeded, there was no turning back. He had 18 releases in a year in 1984 and set a record. He had worked three shifts a day to finish his flicks. He appeared in nearly 150 films until retiring in 2015.
Meanwhile, Vijayakanth's former acquaintances reminisced. The proprietor of a prominent theatre, RS Mohandas, recalled his memories of Vijayakanth before his acting career took off. thiruvananthapuram has three movie theatres screening tamil films, which Vijayakanth attended. He was also a huge fan of late malayalam actor prem Nazir, never missing a single one of his films.
Another individual who knew the actor in the 1970s said that even after becoming famous, Vijayakanth remained the same guy when he visited, unfazed by his celebrity.
