If Talk Is Negative, Film Will Die On Day-1 Itself
Almost five major telugu films and three dubbed films are expected to compete at the telugu state's Sankranthi box office in 2024. Producers and distributors are already meeting to ensure that some of the films are dropped from the competition so that others may secure a good number of cinemas. But here's a trade pundit's prediction that came true many times before.
On any other day, with only a few films competing at the box office, even an ordinary or below-average picture has a chance of surviving for a week or two. This is due to the fact that no new films will be available for distributors and exhibitors until the following Friday. However, during Sankranthi, if three biggies are launched on the same day, and one of them flops, the exhibitors would almost certainly replace that film with a superhit. During the Sankranthi season, most local distributors and exhibitors only want to earn more money.
During the Sankranthi season in 2001, three huge films clashed at the box office: Megastar's "Mrugaraju," Balayya's "Narasimha Naidu," and Venky's "Devi Putrudu." Unfortunately, "Mrugaraju" had a bad reception on its opening day (Jan 11th), resulting to its removal from several venues on the third day. On january 14th, it was replaced with "Narasimha Naidu" in some areas and "Devi Putrudu" in others. However, "Devi Putrudu" encountered difficulties, and "Narasimha Naidu" finally won more theatres.
Surprisingly, Mahesh Babu, an aspiring celebrity at the time, elected not to release his film "Murari" during the pongal season because it was overrun by films starring huge celebrities. Instead, "Murari" was published on february 17th, in the third week of the month. The picture garnered a mediocre reaction at first, but it eventually became a hit.
