The two primary obsessions of skincare lovers are secretly admiring (read: envious of) their favorite celebrities while fawning over their immaculate, glowing skin and trying every beauty trick in the book to get that desired glow. Let's data-face it, who doesn't like learning about celebrities' skincare routines and giving them a try?

Essential oils are Shraddha Kapoor's go-to skincare tool, as she disclosed in a recent interview with Elle. She revealed that in addition to liking to use them, she occasionally likes to combine her own customized oils.

Essential oils have gained popularity in the beauty industry within the last ten or so years. The catch is that, because of their extreme potency, they must be applied carefully to avoid damaging the skin.

What exactly are essential oils?

Essential oils are substances that are taken out of plants. The essence, or aroma, of the plant is captured by the oils. Each essential oil has its own distinct essence due to its own aromatic constituents, Dr. Rishi Parashar, head of dermatology at Sir ganga Ram Hospital in Delhi, told india Herald.

He clarifies that mechanical techniques like cold pressing or distillation (using steam and/or water) are the two ways that essential oils are produced. Following extraction, the aromatic compounds are mixed with a carrier oil to produce a usable product.

Due to their potential therapeutic benefits, essential oils are frequently utilized in aromatherapy, skin care, and holistic health practices, according to Dr. Shireen Furtado, senior consultant in medical and cosmetic dermatology at aster CMI Hospital in Bengaluru.

"When it comes to skincare, essential oils offer a range of benefits, including moisturizing properties, anti-inflammatory effects, and the ability to combat certain skin conditions," according to her.

Be Cautious

Dr. Furtado stresses how crucial it is to utilize essential oils correctly since some of them might irritate skin or trigger allergic responses if used topically without the right dilution or supervision.

Additionally, according to Dr. Parashar, something is not always safe just because it is natural. Essential oils are only one of many bioactive substances found in plants and herbal items that might be harmful to your health. However, the majority of essential oils are regarded as safe when used topically or breathed when combined with a base oil.

Additionally, experts warn that it's critical to be mindful of any possible negative consequences. Depending on the person's sensitivity, the oil type, and the application technique, they can be moderate to severe. Skin irritation, rashes, headaches, allergic responses, and respiratory problems are typical adverse effects, particularly when oils are administered topically or breathed in concentrated form.

"Lavender, peppermint, tea tree, and ylang-ylang are the oils most frequently linked to negative reactions," Dr. Parashar says, adding that oils containing phenols, like cinnamon, can irritate skin and should never be used alone. Citrus-based oils can also increase your skin's sensitivity to sunlight, which increases the risk of burns.
