The former BRS government's novel attempts to empower women are showing fruit, with telangana State experiencing a stunning 7.5% increase in the female Gross Enrollment Ratio (GER) in higher education.
The GER of women in telangana increased from 34.1% in 2017-18 to 41.6% in 2021-22. Similarly, men's GER increased by 3.8%, from 34.7% to 38.5%, during the same period, according to the All india Survey on Higher education (AISHE) 2021-22, issued by the Union Ministry of education on Thursday.
Telangana is one of the top ten states with a considerably higher female enrollment than male. Overall, the State had an excellent GER of 40% in 2021-22, whereas the national average was 28.4%. During 2020-21, the State's GER, or the ratio of individuals enrolled in higher education to the population aged 18 to 23, was 39.1 percent.
The increase in female GER may be linked to the preceding BRS government's multidimensional strategy, which included the establishment of residential degree institutions and the Kalyana lakshmi scheme, as well as increased family awareness of the need to send girls to higher education.
During its tenure, the BRS government founded 62 residential degree colleges for women, including 30 under social welfare, 15 under tribal welfare, and 17 under bc welfare residential educational institution societies. Aside from ordinary degree courses, some degree schools provide professional programs such as agriculture and law. Given the surge in female enrollment, institutions have created a considerable number of hostels to help women pursue higher education.
In all, 15,96,680 students, including 8,03,327 women and 7,93,353, registered in various courses in 2021-22, with an average of 611 enrollment per college. The State registered 2,573 colleges, and 2,362 of them participated in the Ministry's AISHE.
