Madurai: 10 injured in Palamedu Jallikattu...

The renowned Palamedu Jallikattu festival on tuesday resulted in 10 injuries, according to news agency ANI. Bull tamers were attempting to tame a bull during the event. For additional care, one patient has been referred to government Rajaji Hospital in Madurai. In tamil Nadu, Jallikattu is primarily observed during pongal festivities. In the sport, a bull is let loose into a throng of spectators, and competitors try to seize the bull's prominent rear hump in an effort to stop it.

Animal rights groups demanded that the sport be outlawed due to the possibility of harm to both players and the bull. But in May 2023, the supreme court maintained the tamil Nadu government's rule permitting the bull-taming sport in the state following protracted public protests over the ban. The tamil Nadu government stated before the supreme court that athletic activities can serve as cultural gatherings and asserted that Jallikattu does not include any bull abuse.

The bull breed utilized for the sport is called Pulikulam or Kangayam. The bulls that emerge victorious from the festival command the greatest price and are much sought after in the market. They are employed in breeding as well.
