Avian Influenza is a Viral Infection, which targets many species of birds. Since the year 2020, this disease has spread to millions of birds. It is a zoonotic disease spreading from animals to humans and from humans to animals. Avian influenza disease seems to be spreading rapidly in birds again in Kerala, after which the health department has become very alert. This disease is also called bird flu. First reported in 2006, avian influenza (AI) is a highly contagious disease that affects many species of domesticated and wild birds, including food-producing birds (chickens, turkeys, quail, guinea fowl). Sometimes this virus can also infect many other mammalian organisms including humans.

It is called zoonotic virus because it can also spread to humans by coming in contact with infected birds, although not much information has been received about it yet. When there is an outbreak in poultry, then the fear increases. Some avian influenza viruses are more dangerous than others. Due to the infection of this virus, the chicken reduces egg laying, many birds become ill.

Symptoms of Humans

Bird flu symptoms can start within two to seven days of infection. In most cases its symptoms are similar to those of influenza, such as cough, fever, sore throat, muscle pain, headache, difficulty in breathing, in some people vomiting or diarrhea. A mild eye infection has also been observed in some people.
