Gabor Cselle Joins OpenAI for Secretive Project
Gabor Cselle, the former CEO and co-founder of the social platform Pebble, has recently joined OpenAI, sparking intrigue with his involvement in a secretive project. According to his LinkedIn profile, Cselle began his tenure at OpenAI in October, but he made the official announcement on social media platform X just yesterday. In his post, he shared, “Will share more about what I’m working on in due time. Learning a lot already,” hinting at exciting developments ahead.
Cselle is a seasoned entrepreneur with a notable track record. He first gained recognition for founding reMail, a mobile email startup that caught the eye of google and was subsequently acquired. Following that success, he co-founded Namo Media, a native advertising startup that was sold to twitter before its transformation into X under Elon Musk’s ownership.
His previous experience includes a significant role at twitter, where he served as a group product manager. In this capacity, he focused on enhancing user experiences, particularly around the home timeline and onboarding processes. After leaving twitter in 2016, Cselle took on the role of director at Google’s Area 120 incubator, where he was involved in developing various spin-off projects.
In 2022, Cselle turned his attention to Pebble, originally called T2, collaborating with Michael Greer, Discord’s former engineering head. Pebble aimed to create a safe and moderated environment, fostering a small yet engaged community. Despite its vision, the platform struggled to achieve substantial growth and ultimately shut down last October. It re-emerged as a Mastodon instance the following month, signaling Cselle’s commitment to exploring new avenues in social media.
This past May, Cselle joined South Park Commons, an accelerator that focuses on generative AI projects. During his time there, he worked on various prototypes, including a project reminiscent of the viral trivia game HQ Trivia.
Cselle’s move to OpenAI is keenly watched as he brings a wealth of experience in both technology and social media to one of the leading organizations in AI development. As he continues to learn and work on his new project, the tech community eagerly awaits further updates on what promises to be an innovative contribution.
