Why The Boys Season 3 Didn't Kill One Major Supe Like The Comics

Why queen Maeve (Dominique McElligott) didn't perish in the season 3 finale, as she does in the comics, is explained by The Boys showrunner Eric Kripke. Season 3 of Prime Video's daring superhero satire series The Seven upped the ante following the success of the first two seasons by escalating the conflict between the titular vigilantes and the dishonest superhero squad The Seven. The third season of The Boys featured the full sociopathic transformation of the show's antagonist, Homelander (Anthony Starr), and the introduction of the original superhero, Soldier Boy (Jensen Ackles).
Many people are happy with how The Boys handled Maeve's arc, despite the mixed reviews to the season 3 conclusion. Maeve escapes Homelander's grasp in the last episode and teams up with Billy and Soldier Boy to take out the evil super. She prefers protecting her comrades before saving herself, though, and jumps out of a skyscraper window with Solider Boy while braving his deadly energy blast after understanding that he is determined to carry out a slaughter. Despite appearing to have given herself up, Maeve is subsequently seen to still be alive. In the third season of The Boys, Maeve's destiny was altered from the comics, as she gives her life to save Starlight from Homelander.
Now, Kripke explains why he decided not to kill off Maeve in The Boys season 3 in an interview with TVLine. Since Maeve's happy ending was well-earned, the showrunner reveals that there were never any plans to kill the character. The fact that Kripke didn't want to commit the Bury Your Gays cliche of hollywood is another reason why he allowed Maeve to live. Kripke opposes the needless murder of LGBT characters. Killing the bisexual Maeve when she deserved a happy ending would have continued that pattern.
