India Allows Iranian Ship To Dock In Kochi: Jaishankar Explains Decision

D N INDUJAA

Background Of The Incident

S. jaishankar explained why india allowed an Iranian naval vessel to dock at kochi amid rising tensions in West Asia.

The statement was made during the Raisina Dialogue held in New Delhi.

The decision came after Iran requested assistance for one of its naval ships that reported technical issues while at sea.

The ship was believed to be the closest Iranian vessel to indian waters at that time.

India granted permission on march 1, allowing the vessel to enter indian territory for safety and repairs.

Iranian Ships In india For Naval Exercises

The Iranian naval vessels had earlier travelled to india to participate in international naval engagements.

These ships took part in the international Fleet review and the MILAN 2026 in Visakhapatnam.

The Iranian ships involved included IRIS Dena, IRIS Lavan, and IRIS Bushehr.

According to jaishankar, the ships had originally come for friendly naval activities before regional tensions escalated.

He said the vessels were essentially “caught on the wrong side of events” due to the sudden geopolitical developments.

Humanitarian Reason Behind India’s Decision

Jaishankar stressed that India’s decision was guided mainly by humanitarian considerations.

The Iranian ship reportedly carried many young naval cadets.

When the ship requested permission to dock due to technical difficulties, india chose to assist.

The minister stated that helping a vessel in distress was the humane and responsible thing to do.

He added that india considered humanitarian principles alongside legal and strategic factors.

IRIS Dena Sinking Incident

The situation became more serious after the Iranian frigate IRIS Dena was reportedly hit by a torpedo on march 4.

The attack was allegedly carried out by a united states submarine in international waters near the southern coast of Galle.

The incident was confirmed by Pete Hegseth.

Sri Lankan authorities recovered 87 bodies, while 32 sailors were rescued alive after the ship sank.

Jaishankar on the Strategic Reality Of The indian Ocean

Jaishankar also addressed growing debates on social media regarding security dynamics in the indian Ocean.

He pointed out that foreign military presence in the region is not new.

For example, the US military base at Diego Garcia has existed for decades.

He also mentioned international forces stationed in Djibouti.

Additionally, he referenced the development of Hambantota Port as part of evolving regional geopolitics.

The minister urged people to understand the complex strategic realities of the indian Ocean region instead of relying only on social media debates.
