The hearing on the bail of delhi riots 2020 accused Umar Khalid, Sharjeel Imam and Gulfisha Fatima has been postponed in the delhi High Court. The reason for this is said to be the bench headed by Justice naveen Chawla not sitting today. Now the next hearing of this case will be on november 25. 53 people were killed in the delhi riots of 2020. While more than 700 people were injured. Umar Khalid was also arrested by the delhi Police on charges of plotting the riots.

In fact, in July 2024, the bail matter of Umar Khalid was listed for hearing before a division bench of Justice Pratibha M Singh and Justice amit Sharma. After Justice Sharma recused himself from hearing the case, the case was sent for re-listing on a different date before a different bench.

Justice Sharma recused himself from hearing the bail pleas of the co-accused in the case because he had appeared in various UAPA cases for the NIA as a special public prosecutor while working as a lawyer.

No relief from the court yet

Let us tell you that Umar Khalid had approached the delhi High court after his bail plea was rejected by the trial court. He had approached the trial court after withdrawing the petition from the supreme court after several adjournments and the apex court judges recusing themselves from the case. After the delhi riots 2020 subsided, the delhi Police took action against the accused. During the investigation, the delhi Police had registered a case against Khalid, Sharjeel and Fatima, among others, under several sections of the stringent anti-terrorism law (UAPA) and the indian Penal Code (IPC).
