In the era of human progress, sea become sicker…?

The basis of life on earth is water. Here, there is less dry land and more water. The sea contains a vast amount of water. The sea is spread over two-thirds of the earth and it is filled with so much water that every person can get one and a half trillion liters of water. As vast as the sea is, it is also full of diversity of life, about which we are not able to know even a single fraction. The diversity of life in the sea is not only many times more than on land, but it is also the biggest sink of atmospheric carbon for the present times. The huge reservoir of water is not only the home of 3 lakh to 22 lakh types of living creatures, but also stores the immense heat coming from the sun and makes the temperature of the entire earth conducive to life.

If there was no sea, then life would not be…

The currents running on a large scale in the sea make the temperature of the earth conducive to life by distributing heat from the hot equatorial region to the cold poles. If the sea was not there, the earth's temperature would have risen by 36°C in the current era of global warming. Large scale weather processes like monsoon, El Niño, and even the weather and climate on the entire land are umbilically linked to the sea. The sea is not only a major component of the world ecosystem but also a major source of the world's food supply; up to 88% of the total fish production is caught from the sea.

In a way, the sea is at the root of not only human existence but the entire global ecosystem. In the rapidly changing era of climate change, the sea is also changing at the same pace. Radical changes have been recorded not only in the physical and chemical structure of the sea but also in its biological structure, especially in the last two decades. These changes include chemical and plastic pollution, eutrification, loss of biodiversity, decrease in the pH of seawater, i.e. ocean acidification and the loss of biodiversity, especially coral decay, sea salt and microplastic contamination of the food chain, decrease in carbon sink due to change in algae composition, and most importantly, increasing temperature of seawater, especially the upper water.
