In 1993, jagat prakash nadda was elected as an mla for the first time in the himachal pradesh Assembly. He was also the leader of the party in the himachal pradesh Assembly. He also became an mla in 1998 and was made a cabinet minister in the then Dhumal government. However, in 2003, jagat prakash nadda had to data-face defeat from Tilak raj of Congress. After this, in 2007, he succeeded in winning the election again. He was the minister of Forest, Environment Science and technology Department in the Dhumal government which ran from 2007 to 2012.
