At least four people including a woman died due to heat wave in Palamu district of Jharkhand. The state's highest maximum temperature of 47.4 degrees Celsius was recorded here on thursday (May 30). An official said that four deaths were reported from different parts of the district. Three people died during treatment in the hospital, while one died outside the hospital.

Palamu Civil Surgeon Dr Anil Kumar Singh said that the patients were suffering from heatwave. He said that about 10 people suffering from heatwave related diseases are undergoing treatment at the district hospital. He said that a rapid action team has also been formed to deal with the heatwave situation. On wednesday, there was news of two people dying due to heatwave related diseases in Garhwa district.

Birds die due to heatwave

A senior official of the state health department said that the deaths being attributed to the heatwave are actually due to co-morbidities. Apart from humans, the heatwave is also troubling birds, especially bats. Reports of bat deaths are coming from various parts of the state, including Garhwa, ranchi and Hazaribagh. Hundreds of bats died on wednesday near the Son River in Kandi police station area ofGarhwa.

Dilip Kumar Yadav, Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) of Garhwa (North), said that the actual cause of death will be known only after the post-mortem examination. However, extreme heat conditions cannot be ruled out, as these types of birds data-face trouble in temperatures above 42 degrees Celsius. Garhwa recorded a temperature of 48 degrees Celsius on wednesday, while it was recorded at 47.1 degrees Celsius on Thursday.
