Underworld don Chhota Rajan sentenced to life imprisonment

convicted in 25 years old Jay Shetty murder case

Chhota Rajan news: Jay Shetty was shot dead on the first floor of a hotel in mumbai on 4 May 2001. This incident was carried out by Chhota Rajan's henchmen Kundan Singh Rawat and ajay Mohite.

A special court in mumbai has sentenced underworld don Chhota Rajan to life imprisonment in the murder case of hotelier Jay Shetty. Jay Shetty was shot dead 25 years ago. This murder was carried out by his henchmen at the behest of Rajan. Chhota Rajan was earlier sentenced to life imprisonment in the murder case of journalist J Dey.

Special Judge AM Patil for cases under the maharashtra Control of Organized Crime Act (MCOCA) convicted Chhota Rajan under sections 302 (murder) and 120B (conspiracy) of the indian Penal Code and MCOCA provisions. After this, the court sentenced him to life imprisonment. The court has also imposed a fine of Rs 16 lakh on Rajan. Chhota Don is currently lodged in Delhi's Tihar Jail.

Rajan's real name is Rajendra Sadashiv Nikalje. He was arrested by Indonesian police in october 2015 and was later extradited to india from Bali. He was absconding for about 30 years before his arrest and is believed to be the right hand man of fugitive underworld don Dawood Ibrahim. Special Public Prosecutor (SPP) pradeep Gharat said that after the verdict, Rajan was convicted in seven cases including six cases in the city.

Where was jai Shetty killed?

Jai Shetty was the owner of the Golden Crown Hotel in Gamdevi, central Mumbai. Shetty was receiving extortion threats from Chhota Rajan. When he refused to pay the weekly payment, Chhota Rajan sent his henchmen to kill him. jai Shetty was gunned down on the first floor of the hotel on May 4, 2001. According to the prosecution, the murder was carried out by members of an organised crime gang led by Rajan.

Jay Shetty was shot by Chhota Rajan's henchmen Kundan Singh Rawat and ajay Mohite. Mohite was caught red-handed and a pistol was recovered from him. However, Rawat managed to escape from the spot, but later died. Investigation revealed that Pramod Dhonde, rahul Pansare, sameer Manik had conspired to kill Jay Shetty at the behest of gangster Hemant Pujari and Rajan.

Before the case was handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), the mumbai police had incorporated provisions of MCOCA in the case as Rajan and Pujari had several cases against them. During the trial against Rajan, the prosecution cross-examined 32 witnesses, including the victim's sons. In a separate trial, a special judge in 2004 sentenced shooter Mohite to life imprisonment.

Dhonde and Pansare were acquitted of murder charges but were sentenced to five years' imprisonment each for extortion. Manik was absconding and was arrested in 2008 and acquitted by the court the same year. Pujari is still absconding in the case. Rajan is already serving life imprisonment for the murder of journalist J Dey in 2011 and is currently lodged in Delhi's Tihar jail.
