Ahead of the lok sabha elections 2024, congress spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala has suffered a major setback. On tuesday (April 16, 2024), the election commission of india (ECI) banned his election campaign. This action was taken against the congress leader over his controversial statement regarding bharatiya janata party (BJP) mp hema Malini. The election commission has imposed a 48-hour ban on randeep surjewala from campaigning and giving any kind of media interview. According to the election commission, "Under Article 324 of the Constitution of india and all other powers competent in this behalf, the election commission prohibits him (Randeep Surjewala) from attending any public meeting, public meeting, etc. for the next 48 hours from 6 pm on april 16, 2024." Prohibits processions, public rallies, road-shows and interviews, public speeches in the media (print, electronic, social media)."

BJP had given a complaint after the statement on hema Malini

BJP had complained to the election commission after the senior congress leader's controversial remarks on hema Malini, after which the election commission had issued a notice to randeep surjewala and sought his reply. In this show cause notice sent in early april 2024, the election commission had termed his remarks against the bjp mp as "indecent, obscene and uncivilized". However, randeep surjewala had replied that the video about which the complaint has been made has been tampered with.
