During President Gayoom's absence, a coup was planned...?

The Maldives' third and final coup attempt was organized just before President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom was scheduled to depart the nation. Gayoom was scheduled to embark on an official visit to india on november 3, 1988, but the trip was abruptly canceled. In actuality, rajiv gandhi was India's prime minister at the time. Gayoom was visiting rajiv gandhi in India. Because of the elections, rajiv gandhi had to leave Delhi. So he gave President Gayoom a call and requested that he continue his tour.

Gayoom had no idea that the maldives was about to experience a major catastrophe. The former president, Ibrahim Nasir, worked with the Sri Lankan extremist group 'Plot' and wealthy businessman Abdullah Lutufi to plan the entire uprising. The previous night, the fighters from sri lanka had sneaked into Malé, the capital of the maldives, under the guise of tourists. Although President Gayoom remained in the President House, they believed he had departed for India. The fighters dispersed around Male, the capital of the maldives, with the intention of overthrowing the current government. They broke into every government facility and took up residence there. The mall began to resound with the sound of gunfire.

Television towers, radio stations, government buildings, and airports were also taken over. There were terrorists all around every turn.
