As per report the madurai cbi court has rejected the final report filed by the cbi in the Thoothukudi Sterlite firing case. On 22.05.2018 and 23.05.2018, 15 people were shot dead in firing on the general public who were peacefully protesting for the permanent closure of the Tuticorin Sterlite plant. Many were seriously injured. On 28.05.2018, KS Archunan, former secretary of Thoothukudi district of the Communist party of the Communist party of India, requested to register a first information report against district Collector Venkatesh, district Superintendent of police Mahendran, police Inspectors Hariharan, Meenakshinathan, Partheepan, Tahsildars Shekhar, Kannan, Chandran and others responsible for the firing. Sent a complaint.

Later, various public interest petitions were filed in the madurai high court, demanding action against the police and revenue officials responsible for the shooting and ordering a cbi investigation. The case was transferred to the cbi and the high court ordered the cbi to file a First Information Report on KS Archunan's complaint regarding the firing. The appeal filed by the tamil Nadu government in the supreme court against this order was also dismissed. However, the cbi initiated the investigation on the same First Information Report which was already registered by the police and the cbi did not register the First Information Report on KS Archunan's complaint. Hence, a contempt of court case was filed against the cbi in the madurai High Court. After that the First Information Report was registered.

The cbi completed the investigation and filed the final report in the madurai cbi court against only police Inspector Thirumalai. Various objections were raised by KS Archunan, including that the action of the cbi is against the law, that the final report of the cbi should be rejected, and that action should be taken against all the officers involved in the killings and crimes and the objection petition was filed in the court. CBI's response was received and investigation was underway. In this situation, on that day, madurai cbi Chief criminal Justice Department Judge Pasumbonchanmukaiah rejected the final report filed by cbi and ordered that cbi conduct proper investigation and submit final report within six months against those responsible for the shooting.

The CPM has been involved in all legal proceedings since its inception to take action against the police and revenue officials involved in the Thoothukudi shootings and encroachments. It is worth noting that this case filed by former Thoothukudi district Secretary of the Communist party, KS Archunan, is the only pending criminal case filed against the officers involved in the Thoothukudi shooting massacres and anarchy.
