At Aamir Khan's insistence, R madhavan got drunk...

Filmmaker and actor R madhavan recalled a humorous occurrence that happened when he was shooting a sequence for the film 3 Idiots. On the recommendation of the film's star, Aamir Khan, he disclosed that he was in fact intoxicated during a specific moment on shooting. In an interview, madhavan stated that Aamir had said it's easier to appear sober when intoxicated than the reverse. In a podcast, madhavan acknowledged that all three of the lead actors were intoxicated when the sequence was being filmed.

He clarified that Aamir intended for intoxicated scenes to portray normal behavior rather than inebriation. With a goal of having a few drinks by 8:30–8:45, they intended to begin drinking by 8 in preparation for a 9 o'clock shoot. "So, Aamir's idea was that you should never act like you're drunk in drunk scenes," he remarked. You ought to have a drink and carry on as usual. Basically, Aamir planned everything so that we could shoot at nine. We would start drinking at eight, and by eighty-five or eight forty-five, we would have finished our three or four pegs. However, at 8:30, they announced that there were still two hours remaining since the lighting had malfunctioned. We therefore intended to keep our blood alcohol content constant, but we were unaware that the chilly air of Bangalore would affect our drunkenness entirely differently. We assumed everything was okay by the time the shot arrived, but we were taking hours to deliver the lines.

Madhavan also related a personal story that was eerily similar to a moment from 3 Idiots, in which he described having a heart-to-heart conversation with his disgruntled father. He disclosed that his low maths score of 39% caused him to fail the eighth grade. "I was not a very good student, much to my parents' disgust and dismay," he acknowledged. Their wish was for me to marry into Tata Steel, move in with my father, and share his home. I recall my parents' heartbreaking state.

Although my dad doesn't usually act dramatic, we were strolling along the railroad tracks following my application being turned down by the previous engineering college. "What have I done wrong with you?" he asked, his eyes welling with sorrow. I uttered, "Appa, I have no idea what I'm going to become, but I do know what I don't want to do, and it's not your job." Thirty years at the table and I'm going to kill somebody. That's not proper of me. I promise not to let you down, that's all I can say.
