Ban on cigarettes and tobacco in college campus!

The university Grants Commission (UGC) has issued a reminder to all higher educational institutions to follow the instructions of the central government regarding tobacco free educational institutions. Giving strict instructions, UGC said that the guidelines issued for tobacco free campus should be strictly followed 100 percent. UGC said, "Higher educational institutions are requested to effectively implement the Tobacco Free Educational Institution (TOFEI) manual and guidelines, and ensure that their campuses are free from tobacco, electronic cigarettes and other intoxicants."

UGC issued a letter

In this regard, UGC issued a letter on september 11, in which all the Vice Chancellors of universities and Principals of colleges were told that tobacco addiction among youth is a matter of concern. It is the responsibility of educational institutions to strictly implement every rule set towards solving this problem. Along with this, UGC also expressed concern over the increasing prevalence of e-cigarettes among students.

'Tobacco use trend is increasing among children aged 13 to 15 years'

UGC gave the example of Global youth Tobacco survey 2019 and said that 8.5 percent of students aged 13 to 15 years use tobacco products in different ways. More than 5500 children get addicted to tobacco every year. The survey revealed that about 14 percent of students (13-15 years) in india had become addicted to tobacco. After this, a campaign was run in educational institutions and some effect was also seen, but the use of tobacco by students is still a matter of concern.

The Ministry of health had made guidelines for tobacco free campus and it has been sent to every institution. Tobacco free campus includes those institutions in which the use of tobacco products is prohibited inside the campus and outside area (up to 100 yards). Institutions have made comprehensive policies for this.
