An important step forward has been the agreement india and china struck over patrolling arrangements along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh.
Before PM Modi's trip to russia for the BRICS Summit, Foreign Secretary vikram Misri gave a special media briefing. He said that an agreement had been reached on patrolling arrangements along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in the data-border areas between india and China as a result of the discussions with the Chinese interlocutors.
According to him, this would finally result in a disengagement from the situation and the settlement of the problems that emerged following Chinese military intervention in eastern Ladakh in 2020.
As previously noted, we have held discussions with Chinese interlocutors through the WMCC. Additionally, we have met with military commanders at different levels to address matters at the military level. In the past, these conversations have resolved standoffs in different locales. You are also aware that the standoff was still ongoing in a few places," he remarked.
"Now as a result of the discussions that have taken place over the last several weeks, an agreement has been arrived at on patroling arrangements along the line of actual control in the India-China data-border areas and this is leading to dis-engagement and eventually a resolution of the issues that had arisen in these areas in 2020." While there is currently no information available on PM Modi's bilateral engagements outside of the BRICS Summit, the agreement on patrolling arrangements may open the door to a meeting between the Chinese President and PM Modi.
"A frank, constructive, and forward-looking exchange of views on the situation along the LAC to narrow down the differences" was said by the MEA following the conclusion of the most recent Working Mechanism for Consultation & Coordination on India-China Border Affairs (WMCC) in August.
