According to the white house, US President Joe Biden "reiterated his clear position" over a potential assault of the Gaza data-border city of Rafah during a conversation with Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday. Further information on that portion of the conversation was not included in a white house statement. According to Washington, a Rafah operation would require a suitable and reliable humanitarian strategy in order for it to be supported.

John Kirby, the national security spokesperson for the white house, stated previously that israel had promised to consider US worries and suggestions before launching an invasion. The last time the two presidents spoke was on april 13, following Iran's missile and drone attacks on Israel.

According to the statement, "the President reaffirmed his ironclad commitment to Israel's security." The two leaders discussed negotiations aimed at achieving an immediate truce in Gaza along with the release of some of the prisoners detained during the onslaught launched by Hamas on october 7. They also talked about accelerating humanitarian delivery and being ready to open new gates into Gaza.

"The President stressed the need for this progress to be sustained and enhanced in full coordination with humanitarian organisations," said the press release.
