BRS - Herculean Challenges Ahead

SIBY JEYYA
For the past 20 years, Bharat Rashtra Samithi (formerly telangana Rashtra Samithi) has been closely associated with telangana, to the extent that it once became the state's identity. That is no longer the case, though. Today is BRS's 23rd anniversary of formation. The party is currently going through its lowest point in 23 years, which presents serious obstacles for K. Chandrashekar Rao, the party president, in trying to bring the party back to its former glory.

BRS overcame several challenges in the once undivided andhra pradesh to play a crucial part in the creation of Telangana. Their desire for their state kept them strong despite defeats. The telangana spirit, which stood for the hopes of those who want a separate state, was BRS's strongest suit. So, when the fantasy materialized, BRS's triumph was certain.

But when the state was established, the political landscape shifted. Telangana's first chief minister, kcr, took office in 2014. Things went well for the party throughout its first term, and the populace was happy with its leadership as well. As a result, it recovered authority in 2018. But with the 2023 assembly elections, things started to change. congress defeated BRS because of anti-incumbency sentiment, especially in South Telangana. The 2023 loss signaled the start of BRS's decline. The government of congress began investigating different frauds and claimed that BRS was responsible for them. The delhi Liquor Case, the phone-tapping scandal, and the kaleshwaram Project... Suddenly, BRS was under attack from all these cases.

In addition, several well-known figures began quitting the party, including the mayor of the GHMC, Vijayalakshmi, incumbent MLAs danam nagender and Kadiyam Srihari, MPs Ranjith Reddy, venkatesh Netha, and BB Patil, among many others. There were still difficulties when it came to assigning tickets for the lok sabha elections of 2024. Many prominent figures declined to run, believing that the congress and bjp would be the main contenders. In Warangal, Kavya, the daughter of Kadiyam Srihari, received the mp ticket from BRS. Kavya made the decision to join congress and abandon BRS even after receiving her ticket.

The bjp and congress are adamant on reducing BRS's sway in the state. Conversely, BRS has resumed utilising telangana sentiment, although it is no longer effective. It will be extremely difficult for kcr to bring the party back. First, BRS would need to secure a significant number of seats in the mp elections. The victory in the Lok Saha elections will aid kcr in reconstructing the party and restoring its renown. If not, he would have to deal with much more difficulties later on.
