Congress on Abhijit Gangopadhyay's Godse remark

The congress has censured former calcutta High court judge Abhijit Gangopadhyay for his alleged statement that he "cannot choose between gandhi and Godse" and has requested that the bjp withdraw his candidacy for the lok sabha elections.

Gangopadhyay was cited as saying that he "cannot choose between (Mahatma) gandhi and (Naturam) Godse" and that he was driven to investigate the logic behind Godse's acts in an interview with a bengali station.

"I have a duty to consider the opposing viewpoint as a member of the legal profession. I have to study Nathuram Godse's works to find out what motivated him to assassinate mahatma Gandhi."

"Until then, I cannot choose between gandhi and Godse," he was quoted as saying.
On Gangopadhyay's remarks, congress general secretary jairam ramesh on monday wrote on X, "It is worse than pathetic that a judge of the calcutta High court, who resigned to contest the lok sabha polls as a bjp candidate blessed by none other than the prime minister, now says that he cannot choose between gandhi and Godse."

"This is totally unacceptable and his candidature should be withdrawn forthwith by those who spare no effort to appropriate the Mahatma's legacy," said Ramesh.

"What will the father of the Do-nation do to protect the father of the Nation?" he asked.

Recently-joined bjp member Gangopadhyay was one of the 19 candidates whose names the party released on sunday for the forthcoming West bengal lok sabha elections.

Gangopadhyay emphadata-sized the "necessity of examining all data-facets of historical events" even though he denounced the assassination of mahatma Gandhi.
