PM Modi's trip to Thimpu postponed by india and Bhutan...

Due to inclement weather, india and bhutan decided on wednesday to reschedule prime minister Narendra Modi's official visit to Thimphu for this week. It was anticipated that Modi's trip to bhutan on march 21–22 would be his final overseas engagement prior to the next general election. The external affairs ministry issued a brief statement on wednesday stating, "It has been mutually decided to postpone the state visit of prime minister to bhutan on 21-22 march 2024 due to ongoing inclement weather conditions over Paro airport." The statement further said, "The two sides are negotiating new dates through diplomatic channels."

Modi was scheduled to visit bhutan a few days after Tshering Tobgay, his counterpart from bhutan, visited india from march 14–18. The Ministry had previously stated that the visit is also consistent with the history of frequent high-level contacts between the two nations. Modi was supposed to meet with Tobgay, as well as king Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck and the former king, Jigme Singye Wangchuck. According to the ministry, the trip would have provided a platform for both parties to discuss and explore methods to deepen and broaden their "exemplary partnership" for the good of the people, as well as to share perspectives on bilateral and regional issues.

Modi announced during Tobgay's visit that New Delhi's development assistance will be focused on establishing infrastructure and fostering connectivity, and that india would increase its support for Bhutan's 13th five-year plan, including taking into account a proposal for an economic stimulus program. Bhutan's five-year plans are primarily funded by indian assistance; during the 12th plan, New delhi gave aid of ₹5,000 crore.
