Bharat bandh today: Nationwide protest...

The Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM), an umbrella organization of various farmer unions, and other farmers' groups have called for a "Gramin Bharat Bandh," or nationwide strike, on Friday, february 16. Citing a number of unmet demands, including the legalization of minimum support prices (MSPs), commuters, including officers and schoolchildren, across the nation are likely to data-face inconveniences. All like-minded farmers' organizations have also been urged by the Samyukta Kisan Morcha to band together and participate in the Gramin Bharat Bandh on february 16. The farmers will participate in "chakka jam" on major roads throughout the nation from 12 noon to 4pm as part of the Gramin or Grameen Bharat Bandh, which is slated to start at 6am and end at 4pm.

The congress is among the political parties that have endorsed the 'Gramin Bharat Bandh'. The call for a Bharat bandh coincides with the lengthy negotiations that ended in vain in chandigarh late on thursday between three Union ministers and the heads of the opposing farmer unions. Union minister Arjun Munda described the talks as "positive" and announced that there will be another meeting on Sunday. The leaders of the farmers declared that they would remain at the punjab and haryana data-borders.

Due to the support of driver and conductor unions connected to punjab Roadways and PRTC in the Bharat Bandh against the Center's proposed hit-and-run law, about 3,000 state-run buses would remain off the road on Friday. For drivers involved in hit-and-run accidents, the law, under Section 106(2)BNS, imposes severe punishments, including a 10-year jail term and a fine of ₹7 lakh.
