Lawmakers clash as maldives parliament explodes in turmoil...

A disturbance transpired on Sunday, january 28, within the Maldivian parliament premises, just prior to a pivotal vote that would define the cabinet of President Mohamed Muizzu, who is currently in office and supports China. The Progressive party of the maldives (PPM) and People's National congress (PNC) MPs from the ruling party forbade opposition MPs from entering the parliament chamber, sparking mayhem. It is important to note that the opposition Maldivian Democratic party (MDP), which holds a sizable majority in parliament, has rejected the appointment of four members of President Muizzu's cabinet from the ruling party.

Concerns over the qualifications of the "designated cabinet ministers" have been voiced by the opposition. As a result, the Speaker of the House's operations and parliamentary proceedings were interfered with by the MPs from the ruling PPM and PPC. Some ruling Members of parliament were spotted blowing trumpets adjacent to the Speaker's chair in footage that have surdata-faced on social media. Opposition MPs were observed being manhandled, pushed, and shoved by others. After seeing the videos of the altercation, people on social media started to wonder about the political unrest in the archipelago.

President Muhammad Muizzu's request for New delhi to remove its troops from the maldives and the derogatory remarks made by Maldivian government officials and junior ministers against prime minister Narendra Modi have strained relations between the two countries. As a result, two opposition parties in the maldives have publicly denounced the current government for its "stark" anti-India pivot.

The Maldivian Democratic party (MDP) and The Democrats together released a press release describing the shift in foreign policy as "extremely detrimental" to the country's long-term development. The Opposition's view that "alienating any development partner, and especially the country's most steadfast ally, will be extremely detrimental to the long-term development of the country" was reasserted and reinforced by the statement.
