Murmu and Macron arrive in a buggy to celebrate Republic Day!!!

Reviving a 40-year tradition, President Droupadi Murmu and her French counterpart, Emanuel Macron, arrived for the 75th Republic Day ceremonies on friday in a horse-drawn buggy from the colonial era. For the sixth time in history, Macron was the primary guest during the festivities. Murmu and Macron were escorted to India's most ceremonial event by the elite President's bodyguard regiment, the country's oldest cavalry outfit founded 250 years ago. Six feet is the minimum height requirement of the regiment's troopers. Accompanying the presidential buggy that was last utilized for Republic Day celebrations in the 1980s was a group of people dressed in brilliant red long coats, gold girdles, white breeches, blue and gold turbans with fans, and napoleon boots with spurs.

The buggy was no longer used due to security concerns after prime minister Indira gandhi was killed by her bodyguards in 1984. For both the pounding retreat ceremony and the Republic Day parade, presidents would ride in the buggy. For forty years, limousines were utilized for these events. The presidential custom of riding the six-horse buggies to the pounding retreat ceremony, which closed the Republic Day celebrations in 2014 at the heavily guarded route leading to Rashtrapati Bhavan, was resurrected under President pranab mukherjee (2012–2017).

The national insignia, the Ashoka Chakra in gold, and traditional decorations cover the buggies. The buggy is pulled by mixed-breed horses from austria and india with gold-plated rims.

President APJ Abdul Kalam's press secretary from 2002 to 2007, SM Khan, claimed that the buggy was frequently used for events in the forecourt of Rashtrapati Bhavan. "However, security concerns prevented its use on Republic Day."

Khan stated that the Union home Ministry, Rashtrapati Bhavan, and security agencies needed to have looked into the situation and taken the appropriate safety measures. "They had to have done the required preparations in order to operate the buggy. It's a wonderful thing they started this custom, and it should be followed because it symbolizes the actual ceremony of the president showing up for the festivities. Compared to limos, this [buggy] is more colorful and appealing.
