Delhi Airport in chaos as thick fog and runway repairs hit flight ops
As delhi has been dealing with extreme cold in recent days, aircraft operations at the indira gandhi international airport (IGI) in the national capital have been severely hampered by a thick layer of fog. Aside from limited visibility, the situation deteriorated since delhi airport now only has one CAT III-equipped runway for low-visibility operations. According to ANI, runway 28/10 has been blocked for scheduled re-carpeting since mid-September.
Flight diversion during fog is also dependent on pilots' CAT-III training. Pilots with CAT-III training are competent and certified to perform Category III instrument landing approaches. Category III (CAT-III) is a set of international criteria for precision instrument approach and landing in difficult weather situations. It combines modern autopilot and ground equipment to allow aeroplanes to land in extremely poor visibility situations, such as dense fog or severe rain.
Over 100 aircraft were delayed at IGI on monday morning, according to flightradar24, the flight tracking website. Additionally, five planes were diverted from delhi airport to jaipur (04) and ahmedabad (01) between 1 and 5 a.m. on Monday. Visibility at IGI was nil around 3 a.m., although it increased later.

The airport administration announced on X, "Due to severe fog, flight operations at delhi airport may be disrupted. Passengers should contact the airline for the most up-to-date flight information. The message further stated, "Any inconvenience caused is deeply regretted."
