Subir Biswas, a renowned artist from Jhargram, has redefined traditional representations of Goddess Durga through his innovative use of slate.

Traditionally, durga puja involves grand clay idols of the goddess and her entourage, but Subir Biswas has introduced a fresh perspective by crafting towering representations of Durga using slate. What began as an incidental discovery—Subir noticed the residual shapes while sharpening a shoemaking tool on a slate—soon evolved into a meticulous artistic pursuit. His fascination with slate led him to explore its potential as a medium for detailed artwork.

Over the past year, Subir has painstakingly joined hundreds of small slates to create a striking 8-foot-tall and 6-foot-wide idol of Goddess Durga. This impressive work also includes figures of Goddess Lakshmi, Lord Ganesha, Goddess Saraswati, and Lord Kartikeya. In total, around 400 slates were used to bring this ensemble to life, with each deity requiring between 60 to 70 slates.

Living in the Ghoradhara area of Jhargram, Subir Biswas has been engaged in artistic pursuits for over 40 years. His journey began with sculptures made from wood, tree roots, and bamboo before he stumbled upon the potential of slate carving. He describes his artistic creations as expressions of devotion to the divine feminine, viewing his work as a form of worship rather than religious scholarship.

Subir’s workshop has become a popular destination for visitors intrigued by his unique slate artwork.
